What I want people to say about me as a photographer and business that might shock you is: “He’s a little expensive…but worth it!” I always want to be changing and never settle for mediocrity and here’s why…
PHOTOGRAPHY WITH PURPOSE
Without purpose, photography as a business can become a commodity. And truly, that’s how it’s looked at a lot of the time. I always here people saying they just want to find a cheap photographer – whether it’s for their wedding or for a birthday party. Some even want it for free.
I love the reaction I get from them once they see what I do for women (and couples). They suddenly realize that there is photography worth paying for.
Don’t get me wrong, as an example, passport photography has a purpose. Unfortunately, it’s one of those things that’s so defined that there is no art to it.
Photography that is creative, artistic, evokes emotion, and makes a difference in peoples lives is worth pursuing a business for.
THE COST VS THE VALUE
I know quite a few photographers in the Greater Toronto Area that think bringing up the cost of their photography equipment, how hard they work, etc. are great selling points to their potential clients. The thing is no one cares. Of course, if you don’t charge enough then you can’t stay in business. It’s easy to see that from the retailers in Canada going out of business.
Potential clients want to know what value you can bring to them. What are they paying for that they get? When photographers mention their hardships it signifies that they don’t really want to do the work.
Conversely, if I told you that you not only get great photographic art at the end of a photoshoot, but you get an amazing experience, then things change. When women can learn to feel great about themselves and discover just how great they can look in front of a camera there is no other comparison.
If you know someone with a DSLR and they take great photos that’s awesome. If potential clients come to me thinking “he’s a little expensive” and by the end of it come to the realization that they’re hard-earned money was “entirely worth it” then I know I’ve made the right connection.
There are times you want cheap, but that’s not what I offer or who I am. I know what I can give women and between you and me the connection we create goes far beyond what the images or the Google Business reviews/testimonials will ever be able to reveal. You’d have to experience it for yourself and that’s a beautiful thing!
Albeit, it means some women won’t even give it a chance and will therefore never know what they’re missing.
Made by Ten is a little expensive…but so worth it!
CREATIVITY, ARTISTRY, AND LEARNING ABOUT YOU
Personally, I can’t go through life without expressing my creativity and artistry. I could figure this out on my own without setting it up as a business though. For example, I could just continue taking beautiful landscapes and keeping them for myself.
Learning about you (and other women) is what really keeps me moving. Being able to transform their hearts and change the way they feel about themselves is incredibly moving to me. I’ve had hand written letters and even messages from husbands thanking me for what I was able to do.
If that isn’t life-fulfilling I don’t know what is. Photography with purpose is what I strive for!

Jonathan How is the photographer behind Made by Ten and calls Milton his home. He specialized in creating beautiful, creative portraits of real women. He uses photography (and this blog) to help them build confidence and love for themselves and creates artistic images for their homes and offices. You can see him driving around the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) in Ontario, Canada from portrait to fashion shoot and back again.
