Beyond Sight and Sound: Getting Over Yourself

If you’re like most people, you’ve contemplated how you’re looked at. This thought quickly snowballs into thinking about your imperfections; all of the negative thoughts that would go through their mind. You probably don’t think of the negative things. I’d like to share why you shouldn’t worry about what people think because the ones that matter in your life aren’t seeing what you see (or think you see).

LISTEN

Hearing your own voice can be as shocking to you as seeing your own picture. We never intend to hear our own voices, but sometimes phones play weird tricks and suddenly it’s like we’re talking to ourselves on the other line. Or sometimes we accidentally hear our own voice message. Most people will shudder at the sound and likely ask someone else if they really sound like that. It’s certainly a shock because it’s not often we hear ourselves.

We have an idea of how we talk, but we can’t seem to hear every nuance. The reason is probably because we actually hear it all the time and it eventually falls into the nothingness of our receptors. However, that friend or whoever you asked probably told you that’s pretty much how you sound, but they don’t know why you’re so ashamed. That’s because it’s something they’ve gotten used to as well.

When the important people in your life listen to you they don’t care about your intonation or inflections in your voice; they hear deeper and care about the message you’re conveying.

LOOK

The same can be said about how we look. If you’ve ever had a bad photo taken (which you may think are all of them), then you probably react the same way as hearing your voice.

You might point out a double chin, a strange bulge, pimples, or stray hairs. If you quickly turned to your friend they’d tell you that that’s how you look, but once again they don’t see what’s wrong.

When the important people in your life see you they don’t care about your imperfections; they look deeper and care about the person you are.
