For us to be the best women’s portrait photographer in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) we believe we need to listen to you and get to know you. Only then can we create images based on who you are and want to be, what you want to accomplish, how you want to be photographed, where you want it to take place, and why it means so much to you.
We listen to women and figure out what they want to get out of a photoshoot session. Some want to get through a mid-life crises, others just want someone who can execute the ideas in their minds, others want to create something that will serve to empower their children when they see how strong their mom can be, others want portraits that can be passed down from generation to generation, and so on…
HOW WE ARE DIFFERENT
There are two types of photographers or photography studios you typically come across in the Greater Toronto Area:
COMMERCIAL AND CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHERS
There are photographers who create artistic, high quality portrait work for commercial fashion brands. You’ll see a lot of them in magazines.
They also have their own personal projects that allow them to bring their skill set to regular people. However, they are very selective of who they photograph in these instances. Unless you catch their interest or you have a lot of money, it’s unlikely you’ll ever be sitting in front of their cameras.
MAINSTREAM PHOTOGRAPHERS
On the other hand there are photographers in the GTA that cater primarily or solely to regular, everyday women, men, families, etc. They usually have to take on volume which means that processes, techniques, and results have to be quite consistent.
For example, take a look at their images between different clients and you’ll see very similar if not exactly the same looks. There’s nothing wrong with this and, in fact, it’s quite necessary.
MADE BY TEN
At Made by Ten we like to mix things up and being innovative. We figure there’s enough of both of those types of photographers, but what about the regular folk who want bigger and better! You know, the ones who want all that creativity, artistry, and magazine quality and look.
That’s where we have placed ourselves in photography in the Greater Toronto Area. We provide portraits that are typically out of reach.
Many women will come to us and tell us that we were the only ones that could pull off what they were envisioning in their head. The truth is that there are others out there (the first group of photographers we mentioned). Although it’s unlikely that they’d be willing to shoot non-commercially or be in the price range of the average income.
OTHER REASONS WE ARE THE BEST CHOICE
My name is Jonathan How (the photographer behind Made by Ten) and I believe in honesty and integrity. It’s what gets me through life. If I’m honest and you don’t like it then I still won’t have any regrets.
The reason why we meet/chat with clients before booking and/or accepting retainer fees is because we believe in only accepting clients who are a good fit. We are willing to leave money on the table even if the client thinks we would be great for them! Our favourite vendors also feel this way.
We also don’t purport to be masters either. Our prices only grow as we learn and innovate. We aren’t a volume photography studio by any stretch of the imagination! This means we are super down to earth and approachable. We love our ability to make regular women happy and affect change in their lives! :)
